Monte San Giorgio, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Monte San Giorgio is a mountain in the south of Canton Ticino, on the border between Switzerland and Italy.   It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to one of the most important marine fossil deposits in the world and an interesting geological area. It is possible to relive the beauty of this world of the past by visiting Fossil Museum in Meride, the Archaeological Park in Tremona, the panoramic terrace of Val Mara and by exploring the suggestive Cave di Arzo, with its natural amphitheatre.   All over the territory Monte San Giorgio is characterized by a network of different trails, which are suitable for hikers and mountain bikers and will lead you to discover the breath-taking panorama that embraces the lake and the mountains and is visible from its summit (1097 m.). You will also have the opportunity to see Poncione d’Arzo, Alpe di Brusino and Serpiano, from where you can reach the lake by using a cable car.   At the foot of the mountain, the villages of Tremona, Besazio, Arzo and Meride (which has been federally protected since the 1970s) still preserve an authentic atmosphere in their cores and they enrich the tourist and cultural offer also at an Eno gastronomic level with the typical Grotti.
Flora

Monte San Giorgio is home to a varied vegetation which is characterized by chestnut, oak, beech and holly woods and some protected species of flowers, including the Gladiolous imbricatus and the sweet-smelling bellflower (Adenophora liliifolia), both flowering in June/July. The undergrowth is rich in wild garlic (Allium ursinum), Polystichum lonchitis (a type of rare fern) and a great variety of mushrooms (more than 1051 different species have been detected).

Fauna

Since the natural heritage on Monte San Giorgio has remained virtually untouched, it is an ideal habitat for many animal species. Indeed, you will often come across the footsteps of deer, wild boars, roe deer and foxes and you will have the chance to admire the magic of fireflies, the song of various birds, as well as the beauty of the grey heron and the salamander. Moreover, the Italian agile frog (an exclusive species of the southern Ticino) spawns near the Torrente Gaggiolo, which originates from Monte San Giorgio and extends across Parco Valle del Lanza.
